Exciting News: Critical Care achieves 2023 Impact Factor of 8.8!

A message from the Jean-Louis Vincent, Editor-in-Chief

We are excited to share with you some excellent news just released by Clarivate Analytics Ë—  after the anticipated decline in impact factors that followed the exceptional years of the COVID pandemic, the 2023 Impact Factor for Critical Care is 8.8! As such, the journal keeps its second position (after Intensive Care Medicine) in the field of critical care medicine (not considering the journals that also include papers focused on respiratory disease).

This excellent performance reflects the quality of the research produced by the authors, the professionalism and dedication of our reviewers, the commitment of our associate editors and editorial board members, the efficiency of all the staff involved in the publication process, and the engagement and support of our readers Ë— as Editor-in-Chief, I would like to thank all these contributors!

Importantly, the quality of a scientific publication cannot be reduced to a single number. Numerous other factors also contribute significantly. Among critical care journals, we led in total citations in 2023 (over 35,000), our content was widely downloaded with almost 8,400,000 full-text downloads (+12% compared to 2022), and we garnered more than 31,500 mentions on social media. Of particular importance for authors and readers, we have a rapid turn-around time: in 2023 our time to first decision without review averaged just 6 days, and after review, only 12 days! This means that good research is promptly published and shared, and authors of rejected articles can swiftly revise and resubmit elsewhere. Although we cannot measure the quality of the reviews provided, we frequently receive positive feedback from our authors.

We look forward to continuing to receive high quality submissions, including innovative original contributions, challenging letters, thoughtful editorials and comments, and enlightening perspectives. We can thus continue to serve our community by disseminating useful information that can have a positive impact on patient management and outcomes.
