  1. Quantitative values are expressed as mean ± SD and qualitative values are numbers (percentage of group). Tidal compliance of respiratory system was calculated as the ratio of tidal volume to driving pressure. Driving pressure was calculated as the difference between plateau pressure and applied positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP). Mechanical power was calculated as the product of driving pressure in Newton (cm H2O × 0.098), tidal volume and respiratory rate. Day 1 was defined as the 24 hours following the inclusion.
