(A) Time to treatment failure is significantly shorter in emergency department (ED) patients with higher procalcitonin (PCT) levels on admission. (P <0.0001. (B) Time to death is significantly shorter in ED patients with higher PCT levels on admission (P <0.02). Treatment failure is defined as death, ICU admission, rehospitalisation, complications or recurrent or worsening infection within 28 days.
