Serum lactate as a predictor of mortality in emergency department (ED) patients with sepsis. In-hospital mortality rates were documented for patients who presented to the ED with infection, and serum lactate measurements were available (n = 1,278). Greater 3-day and 28-day mortality rates were found in patients with lactate levels of more than 4.0 mmol/L. Reprinted with permission from Elsevier [46].
