Release of pro-inflammatory cytokines by PBMCs of healthy controls (Con, n = 14) and of septic patients. Patients are classified as sepsis (S, n = 14), severe sepsis (SS, n = 18) and septic shock (Sch, n = 11). Cells were stimulated with 10 ng/ml of lipopolysaccharide of Escherichia coli O55:H5 (LPS); with 5 μg/ml of Pam3Cys; and with 5 μg/ml of phytohemmaglutin (PHA) (A, B and C); and with 5 × 105 cfu/ml of heat-inactivated isolates of Candida albicans, of multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (D, E and F). Asterisks denote statistically significant differences compared with the respective healthy controls.
