Table 1 RIFLE classification [24] for acute kidney injury

From: Late initiation of renal replacement therapy is associated with worse outcomes in acute kidney injury after major abdominal surgery

GFR criteria

Urine output criteria

Risk

Increase plasma creatinine ×1.5 or GFR decrease > 25%

< 0.5 ml/kg/h × 6 h

Injury

Increase plasma creatinine ×2 or GFR decrease > 50%

< 0.5 ml/kg/h × 12 h

Failure

Increase plasma creatinine ×3 or GFR decrease > 75%, or serum creatinine ≥ 4 mg/dL with an acute rise > 0.5 mg/dL

< 0.3 ml/kg/h × 24 h or anuria ×12 h

Loss

Persistent ARF = complete loss of kidney function > 4 wk

ESRD

End-stage renal disease (> 3 month)

  1. ARF, acute renal failure; ESRD = end stage renal disease; GFR = glomerular filtration rate; h = hours.
