    Fungemia or Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast virulence can be eliminated completely by using nonviable but still bioactive yeast preparations. A good example of this was the use of nonviable, but bioactive dry "brewer's yeast" by Schellenberg et al. Lancet 1994,343:171-2. In 2008, I treated my antibiotic-associated colitis successfully by taking 9 g of brewer's yeast tid. instead of Vancomycin prescribed. Nonviable but bioactive yeast cells can be produced by irradiation and other means. The most promising use of safe nonvirulent yeast preparations is to prevent antiobiotic associated colitis.
