Innate immune function measured by ex vivo LPS-induced cytokine-production capacities within 48 hours of sepsis onset were lower for sepsis patients compared with healthy controls. Differences were not seen in early innate immune function between sepsis children who developed persistent or nosocomial infection and sepsis children who did not.
