Modification of empiric antimicrobial treatment and microbiological characterization: Among 221 investigated sepsis episodes, 74 (33.5%) required modification of empiric antimicrobial treatment (upper circle). Positive blood cultures (lower right circle) triggered 27 (= 8 + 19) of these changes. Among 73 PCR+ episodes (lower left circle), 29 (= 10 + 19) allowed earlier adequate treatment (data from [17]).
