This figure shows the adjusted effects of different BMI categories on the odds ratio of mortality reported in studies examining patients requiring intensive care unit admission for sepsis, severe sepsis, or septic shock. Effects for underweight (<18.5 kg/m2), overweight (25 to <30 kg/m2), obese (30 to <40 kg/m2), and morbidly obese (≥40 kg/m2) BMIs were calculated compared to patients with normal BMIs (18.5 to 25 kg/m2 or <25 kg/m2). See the results section and Table 2 for variables that each study employed to adjust the effects of BMI on mortality as well as the definitions used for sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock
