The results are expressed as the mean percentage of (A) band cells and (B) myelocytes and metamyelocytes in the blood of patients with definite sepsis (n = 51), non-infectious systemic inflammatory syndrome (N-I SIRS) (n = 39), no SIRS (n = 17), healthy control subjects (n = 14) and patients with possible sepsis (n = 32). Vertical bars denote standard error of the mean. Differences between the groups were assessed by analysis of variance with the Bonferroni post-test for multiple comparisons. **P <0.01 compared with definite sepsis; *P <0.05 compared with definite sepsis.
