The balance between thrombin generation and its inhibition. Disseminated intravascular coagulation occurs when there is an imbalance between thrombin generation and its inhibition. Insufficient coagulation control mechanisms contribute to massive thrombin generation in the circulation, which overwhelms activated protein C-mediated inhibition of thrombin generation.
