Baseline serum creatinine was defined as the minimum among the outpatient values measured within 6 months before hospital admission, the inpatient value before ICU admission and the last value before hospital discharge. For a patient with no creatinine measurement within 6 months before ICU admission, the baseline was defined as the lesser of the last value before hospital discharge and the estimated value using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equation.
