Whenever the incidence of new-onset AF for the various stages of sepsis was not reported separately, the combined incidences are shown. *This study included hospitalized patients with severe sepsis and septic shock, based on ICD-9-CM discharge codes; although most patients had been admitted to the ICU, the study was not formally restricted to critically ill patients only (source: personal communication by the author).
