  1. Determinations of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), albumin (ALB), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), amylase (AMY) total calcium (CA2+), creatinine (CRE), glucose (GLU), phosphorus (PHOS), potassium (K+), sodium (NA+), total bilirubin (TBIL), total protein (TP), globulin (GLOB) and urea nitrogen (BUN) were performed by VetScan Chemistry Analyzer (Abaxis) on 100 μl of heparinized whole blood collected from young, aged and eNOS-deficient mice subjected to 12 hours of severe sepsis (CLP) or sham operation. *(P <0.05) vs. corresponding sham-operated group. #(P <0.05) vs. young CLP mice (n = 5 per group). Please notice the marked degree of multiple organ dysfunctions induced by sepsis in aged and eNOS knockout mice. CLP, cecal ligation and puncture.
