VILI-induced microstructural alterations are attenuated by APC. Mouse lungs ventilated with LVt for 30 minutes (top left) or four hours (top right) showed normal microanatomy. Application of HVt (bottom left) induced histological changes comprising in alveolar septal widening, mononuclear cell infiltration, alveolar hemorrhage and hyaline membrane formation. These changes were markedly attenuated by inhaled activated protein C (APC; bottom right). These observations were documented by semi-quantitative histological scoring (mean ± standard deviation; * denotes P < 0.05 for comparison with LVt-30 min; one-way analysis of variance with post-hoc analysis by Dunnett's test).
