Synopsis of documented and hypothetical factors influencing cerebral perfusion in sepsis. Some of the factors (e.g., nitric oxide [NO]) influence cerebral perfusion at different levels of the brain circulation. It could be speculated that the effect of vasopressors may be unpredictable depending on the degree of blood-brain barrier dysfunction. MAP: mean arterial pressure; CPP: cerebral perfusion pressure; ICP: intracranial pressure.
