  1. Cell counts 40 hours after bacterial challenge (Streptococcus pneumoniae, serotype 3, ATCC 6303). Controls are uninfected rats (n = 4). Total cell and neutrophil data are expressed as median (interquartile range) × 104 per milliliter of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is expressed as pg/mL lung homogenate median (interquartile range). (* P < 0.05;** P < 0.01 versus placebo according to Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's post-tests).
