  1. The table represents the evaluation of candidate scores. All scores include four core items that discriminated between sick (PICU) and well with an area under the receiver operating characteristics curve of >0.75. These items were heart rate, respiratory rate, respiratory effort and oxygen therapy and are designated as 'core items'. We added the candidate items capillary refill time (CRT), transcutaneous oxygen saturation (Satn) and systolic blood pressure (SBP) to the core items and last evaluated these seven items plus temperature. AUROC = area under the receiver operating characteristics curve; CI = confidence interval.
