  1. Values are means (± standard deviation) of eight animals in each group. All values were computed in 10 random, non-coincident fields per rat. The volume fraction of the lung occupied by normal pulmonary areas or collapsed alveoli. Fractional areas of polymorphonuclear cells (PMN) and mononuclear cells (MN). Sepsis was induced by cecal ligation and puncture surgery (CLP). A sham-operated group was used as control (C) for animals undergoing CLP. One hour after surgery, C and CLP groups were treated with saline (SAL) or glutamine (Gln). *Significantly different from C-SAL group (P < 0.05). #Significantly different from CLP-SAL group (P < 0.05).
