Damaging effect of high vascular pressure and repeated cycling on isolated, ventilated, and perfused rabbit lungs. For identical airway pressure profiles (plateau, mean, and end-expiratory pressures), higher peak inflow pressure (35 mmHg) was associated with greater damage, as compared with the control value of 20 mmHg. Reducing cycling frequency from 20 to 3 cycles per minute while holding airway and vascular pressures constant reduced injury severity. Adapted with permission from Hotchkiss and coworkers [25].
