  1. In the peripheral blood samples (n = 33) the monocytes and lymphocytes were significantly reduced after surgery, whereas the neutrophils were significantly elevated. The findings in the bronchiolar lavage samples (n = 33) were different. The trend was similar to the blood samples but only the percentage of macrophages was significantly reduced after surgery. Data are given as medians and IQR in brackets. The Wilcoxon test was used to calculate significant difference for the dependent variables; asignificantly different; n/a, not available.
