Data presented are for survivors (black triangles) and nonsurvivors (white triangles). The dotted line represents the mean value recorded in the healthy controls (n = 36). At ICU admission, study patients were 34 survivors and 18 nonsurvivors; at day 3, 34 survivors and 13 nonsurvivors; at day 7, 34 survivors and 11 nonsurvivors; at day 14 and at day 28, 34 survival patients were studied. All values are expressed as means ± SEM. *P < 0.05 for survivors or nonsurvivors vs healthy controls; †P < 0.05 for survivors vs nonsurvivors.
