Actual body weight is usually artificially increased by the expansion of body water (i.e., fluid administration, stressrelated water retention). Therefore, it is recommended that energy requirements are calculated based on the anamnestic body weight for lean or normal weight patients (body mass index [BMI] = [body weight/(body height)2]) and the ideal body weight for overweight and obese patients (BMI ≥ 20).
