Liver stiffness in critically ill patients with different disease etiologies at ICU admission. (A) ICU patients have significantly higher liver stiffness values as compared with standard care (control) patients. (B) ICU patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis display highest stiffness values. (C) Liver stiffness does not differ between sepsis and non-sepsis patients. (D) In the subgroup of sepsis patients, patients with an abdominal site of infection show higher liver stiffness than patients with sepsis of pulmonary origin. (E-F) Pre-existing type 2 diabetes or obesity (BMI > 25 kg/m2) does not affect liver stiffness in ICU patients. P-values from U-test are given in the figure.
