Episodes of prolonged hypocalcemia or hypercalcemia in ICU patients. A Patients with more severe critical illness (Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) ≥9, n = 76) but normal plasma Ca2+ concentration did not develop critical illness polyneuromyopathy (CIPNM). In contrast, CIPNM was frequently observed in patients of the same group presenting with hypocalcemia. B Hypocalcemia/CIPNM cases in all 190 patients.
